Pioneers

This section of the exhibition examines the people who spearheaded the artistic revolution illustrated posters underwent in the late 1800s. Painters who conjure up the Parisian atmosphere of the period such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard and Vuillard, together with the trailblazer and master lithographer Chéret and practitioners of the art nouveau style such as Grasset and Mucha, alongside Casas, Beardsley and other international artists,

are represented here by notable examples of these exchanges between painting and graphic advertising, some of which, such as Steinlen’s advertisement for the cabaret Le Chat Noir, have become emblems of modernity.
