Reflections of Pop
17 March - 4 September 2016Luis Gordillo (Sevilla, 1934)
Following his informalist beginnings, Luis Gordillo developed an interest in pop art in the 1960s. He was one of the first Spanish artists to employ the appropriation and distortion of mass media images – photographs and ads – as compositional devices together with spot inks and vivid colours, but not from a critical or political approach.
His work, also influenced by psychoanalysis, had major repercussions on the following generation of figurative artists in Spain. Notable among the main subjects in his output of the 1960s and 1970s are heads, derivative figures and cars, in collages, series or multiples.
