Two Bohemians in Paris

Casas and Rusiñol’s various stays in Paris in the 1880s and 1890s, both together and separately, were decisive in bringing them into contact with modern art and shaping their mature style: Casas espoused post-Impressionism and a balanced, elegant realism, while Rusiñol’s approach was intimate and symbolist. Attracted by the experience of bohemian life in Paris, though they both enjoyed the security provided by their privileged financial position, they painted the interiors, landscapes and people of Montmartre, the artists’ districts where they too lived.
