Until the last years of the XIX century Regoyos combined periods of work in Belgium and Spain. In Brussels he became involved in two of the most advanced groups of artists, L’Essor (Flight) and Les XX, and was very much drawn to an occasionally gloomy style of painting, although one that never lost interest in the effects of light. Influenced by his Belgian friends, he used a spatula rather than a brush to apply paint to the canvas in many of his works.
